Video game sales hit record high in U.S. and Canada for the first time in 12 months

Sales of video games in the U.K., France and Germany rose to their highest levels in 12 years in March, marking a second straight month of record-breaking sales in the sector, according to data released Thursday by the Interactive Software Association.
Games that sold more than 50,000 units in March were distributed in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands and in Germany, while in the Netherlands, a title was distributed in 10 of the 13 biggest games markets.
Games were distributed at a pace of 5,000 games per day in the three countries, while a total of 1.7 million games were downloaded in the two countries, according the association.
The total value of sales of video game hardware and software hit a record of $2.3 billion in March according to the association, which expects sales of $3.8 billion in the full year.
Games that sold in excess of 50,001 units were distributed mostly in Europe and Japan, where video games were distributed almost exclusively through Nintendo, according a release.
Nintendo sold 4.2 million units of hardware and 2.4 million in the first three months of the year, compared to a year ago, according data from research firm NPD Group.
The number of software units sold by the Japanese company was 6.2 percent lower than the same period last year.
The top two software developers in March with their titles were Nintendo’s Splatoon 2 and Microsoft’s Gears of War 4.
In the U.”s top games markets, Sony’s The Last Guardian and Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed III sold more units in the month than the previous month, according Tohei Co., a Japanese research firm.
A new series of games, The Order: 1886, has been released in Japan, and Microsoft has been pushing the Xbox One X, which has a 2,094-core Jaguar processor, to the next level.
The latest installment of The Order, the latest installment in the award-winning first-person adventure series from The Dark Knight Rises, is expected to sell more than 20 million units by the end of this year, according Co. The series has sold more copies in Japan than in all of 2013, when it debuted.
Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. and Ubisoft also saw strong sales of their own titles, according their respective press releases.
Ubisoft has been selling the new The Division game on the PlayStation Store in Japan.
